Surreal blend of education simulation and horror elements in an unexpected mobile gaming experience.

Beyond Appearances

Baldi's Basics in Education and Learning initially seems like a conventional education game from the 90s, yet underneath this facade, it slowly reveals a spine-chilling and thrilling experience reminiscent of horror games like Five Nights at Freddy's. Seemingly a strange pairing, education and horror, entertainer Micah McGonigal defied conventions and surprisingly achieved a significant success that is anything but conventional.

Basic Gameplay, Higher Stakes

In Baldi's Basics in Education and Learning, you embody a student navigating the peculiar Baldi's Schoolhouse, sent on a mission to gather seven abandoned notebooks. Each notebook presents three math questions, starting with easy arithmetic problems that progressively become more enigmatic, and even impossible, as more notebooks are collected. Beware of Baldi, though, incorrect solutions anger him and set him on your trail.

More obstacles appear in the form of various characters, such as the demanding Playtime who insists on a skipping rope session on her encounters, an observing Principal, and an assortment of more bizarre characters.

Graphics and User Interface

Graphics could be a decisive factor for many since the design mirrors the simplicity and limited complexity of 90's edutainment games. The basic, almost unsettling visuals contribute to an overall uncanny ambience, deliberately unsettling and responsive to the game's horror undertones.

One drawback may exist in the lack of an in-depth tutorial. There is no directive or introduction to the game controls or specific mechanics, creating an element of surprise and potential spoiler breakthroughs, which also might cause unnecessary frustration due to the lack of guidance in the beginning.

Target Audience

The game's audience range is somewhat vague. While children might not catch every humorist and existential nods that the game includes, it offers an appropriate alternative to more frightening games for younger demographics. Young adults may appreciate the nostalgic 90's design and unorthodox fusion of genres.

Odd but Engaging

Baldi's Basics in Education and Learning is an unusual amalgamation of game genres that initially doesn't seem to pair well. However, it delivers an unpredictable, yet enjoyable gaming experience. Its unique graphic style may require some time to get used to, and yet the game is certainly intriguing, warranting at least an attempt to play it for its novelty alone.
